LOVE IN THE TIME OF COONA VIRTUAL DANCE PARTY: SOUL FOOD + SOLIDARITY

[SCROLL DOWN FOR PLAYLIST]
Ever wonder what the difference is between Southern and Soul Food? How certain dishes ended up as standard summer BBQ fare? How Black and Native Americans have shaped American cooking?

Author Adrian Miller can tell you all about it. He's our featured guest at the final Love in the Time of Corona Virtual Dance Party of the season, "Soul Food + Solidarity." Dancemaker Parijat Desai begins by playing a range of Black and desi musics—some topical, some danceable. Then we offer a moment of collective silence followed by a conversation with 2 special guests:

Soul Food historian and former lawyer/policy expert Adrian Miller talks about his rich research, his new book Black Smoke, and his thoughts about the watershed moment we’re living. We'll also be joined by political organizer Sahana Mehta, just out of college and plugged in. She'll share about South Asian American activism, desi/Black solidarity. and ways all of us can get involved.

6/27/20 PLAYLIST
This playlist was about continuing to stand in solidarity with the movement for Black Lives, and mourning the continued police and economic violence against Black Americans. Black music and artists have long done the labor of healing, connecting, and uplifting people the world over—and I acknowledge and give thanks for that. I selected a mix of Black artists who reflect old and new, queer and less queer, feminine and masculine. Some tracks uplift, some give cutting commentary, others weave grooves so infectious you need a mask. Also included: desi artists who speak a clear politic or reflect the influence of Black music while remaining grounded in their own experience. Many anthems for the movement.
